Nonsense. Her speech pattern is most likely to be the result of how
her parents, friends, and neighbors spoke. Speech patterns usually
develop long before the media has influence unless you consider
Saturday morning cartoons to be "the media".
Untrue. I've lived in Idaho, and older people there (whether of
Hispanic, Native American, or Anglo background) speak very different
from new suburbanites. Sarah Palin's pronunciation has more in common
with that heard in shopping malls throughout America.
You say that what I said is "untrue", but then you talk about the
accent of the shopping malls. In other words, the speech patterns of
family, friends, and neighbors and not something acquired from the
media and not a satirization of the rube culture.
It's basically a
whine expressive mostly of incuriosity about the world outside the
mall, from someone who's proud of her inability to listen to others.
What in world does that translate to?
Are you attempting to associates "rubes" and "shopping malls"? The
American shopping mall is the great mixing bowl of culture where
almost all levels can be found. The very, very, rich and the very,
very poor, may not be found in the shopping mall, but they are the one
location in the US where a cross-section of culture can always be
found.
??? Yes, the very, very poor are escorted out of shopping malls, which
are Holy Private Property, by security guards, and Tazer'd if they get
rowdy. And the very, very rich have their own malls and gated
communities. How is this a great mixing bowl, especially as society is
divided into the very rich and the very poor?
The very, very rich and the very, very poor are the extremes of
society. The great mass of (US) society is between those two
extremes, and they are the ones who mingle in the mixing bowl of the
shopping mall.
Society is not divided between the very rich and the very poor.
That's far too simplistic for intelligent discussion. Some of the
slightly-above-average, income-wise, live in gated communities. A
gated community is hardly a sign of the very rich, let alone the very,
very rich. I know of no shopping mall that admits only the rich, the
very rich, or the very, very rich. There are stores, like those found
on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills CA and in my own area, that admit (by
door buzzer) only those that *appear* rich.
Now tell me how you are equating shopping malls and "rubes".
