Neither am I "elite" (AUE or otherwisw) by any stretch of the
imagination, but I know what "privy" and "privy to" mean. How did that
happen? Was it only because my education continued beyond 9th grade?

Give me a break. As far as using the English language goes, you are
among America's elite, like it or not. One can't hang around this
group for a decade and not be, even if you weren't before you joined.

Isn't it "elitism" to think that the company one keeps determines that
one is among the elite?

You may mean the second definition, but that isn't what "elitism"
means to me, as better described by def 1 in the COD10:

elitism
n.
1 the belief that a society or system should be run by an elite.
2 the superior attitude or behaviour associated with an elite.
DERIVATIVES elitist adj. & n.

Where elite means:
· n.
1 a group of people considered to be superior in a particular society
or organization.

Our Founding Fathers believed in a modified elitism, in which the best
the voters can find should rule, I would say. I believe that too, but
I wouldn't call myself an elitist.
