Is this "take up airs" still in use?
------
The genesis of most firearms control legislation lays in the fact that
government types and societal elites don?t like the masses to have access
to things like that. They take up airs and don?t defer properly to their
betters.
Never heard it before.
Me neither, but in Googling (not Google Grouping) on "take up airs" I
was startled to see hits from alt.usage.english. I've never before
seen Google Groups results from Google Advanced Search. Is this
something new or just something I hadn't noticed before?
A typical hit was
Take up airs - alt.usage.english | Google Groups
The URL where that hit occurred was
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22take+up+airs%22&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all&filter=0
Using Google Groups Advanced Search for "take up airs", the URL for a
hit is
http://groups.google.com/groups?as_q=&num=10&scoring=r&hl=en&as_epq=take+up+airs&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_ugroup=&as_usubject=&as_uauthors=&lr=&as_drrb=q&as_qdr=&as_mind=1&as_minm=1&as_miny=1981&as_maxd=5&as_maxm=8&as_maxy=2008&safe=off
and the form of the hit is
Take up airs Group: alt.usage.english
