To slide into something of an AUE topic, does anyone know when and
why the teaching of shorthand died out in North America/UK/
Australasia?
I know it was being taught when I was in school in the late 1960s
and I wish I'd taken it, but it seems to have completely
disappeared by the 1990s
In 1974-75, I took a class on the use of the slide rule...haven't
actually checked, but I'd bet it's not being offered now....r
Shorthand faded as Dictophone and other sound-recording technology
became cheaper, simpler to operate, and easier for a small office
to have.
I learned Gregg shorthand in 1972, but by 1977 was not using it
anymore; I had a small tape recorder that was more accurate at
capturing exactly what was said than my shorthand had ever been.
I did a shorthand/typing course in the army, 1944, used the typing
but lost the shorthand through atrophy. Typing is like riding a bike,
a skill once learned, never forgotten
Classic psychomotor skill. It's like piano, which one can play at a
high standard into old age (baring arthritis, etc).
One could continue either barring arthritis or bearing it (with fortitude).
