apartment building - apartment house
To call a 30 or 50-storey building a "house" is stretching the definition of the word "house."
An interesting point which catches me with my pants down,
well, if I wore clothes.
Within our family, the tallest building any of us have
eyeballed would be the tallest building over in Los Angeles
more than a decade back.
I looked this up, Library Tower at 73 floors. I do not know
if this building existed last time we were in Los Angeles.
If so, we looked at this from a distance of several miles.
None of us have experienced walking the streets of a big
city, like New York or Chicago. We have no clue of the
feeling of being surrounded by very tall buildings. I am
certain each of us would be most uncomfortable and would
make good our escape, quickly.
Big cities, tall buildings, this is never in our minds.
I agree a tall building would be hard to label a house.
Living in a home on floor 50 of a building, I cannot
imagine this, I cannot wrap my mind around this. This
is truly beyond my comprehension.
Condos are joined at the hip. Is a this a condo house
or two homes in a condo arrangement?
The somewhat disused terms "townhouse" and "rowhouse" refer to those quite well. Although "condo" does have certain elements of definition associated with ownership structure, many people refer to rowhouses as "condos" without knowing for a fact how they are owned. To me "condo" has usually meant a unit in a taller building constructed much like an apartment building, but I realize this restriction is personal and unusual.
I cannot think of a condo as a home. I always think "apartment."
My husband commented once he would rather live in camper on the
back of his pickup truck than live in a condo. I agree.
Your article serves to remind of significant differences in
mindset based on physical location; urban, suburban and rural.
We only know rural and this will never change.
Suppose you could label us city bigots, much so.
After thought, we are psychotic about this. Over the years,
if land adjacent to us went on the market, we would buy this
land, even at ask price. Today, we are surrounded by acreage
and own all the land available which could be built upon. No
more homes can be built up here. There are a total of twelve
homes spread out over hundreds of acres. We bought up land
to prevent any homes being built near us.
Some would think this psychotic, and I would agree.
Clearly I need to remember there are many people who live
in big cities and entertain a completely different notion
than mine, on what is a home.
