Almost all mammals are weaned off milk at an early age, save for
some humans. Humans in dairy climates tend to keep milk in their
diets and keep producing lactase. Those in regions where dairy
products cannot be produced lose lactase production and may not
be able to digest dairy in adult life.

In one of the nutrition groups where I lurk, there was an interesting
study reported not too long ago, suggesting that lactose is harmful to
the health of adults, or adult rats, at least. This might partly
explain the French paradox (petits fours without fear), since the milk
products they (and most Mediterranean types) eat are low in lactose.
They don't drink milk, being filled up with the wine that is probably
the rest of the explanation.
