Larry Harmon played Bozo the clown on TV for decades in the US -- he
passed away Thursday at age 83. Michael Quinion credits the
popularity of US clowns named Bozo (Harmon wasn't the first) as
having brought about a change in the original sense of the word: see
http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-boz1.htm
The Wiki entry for Bozo the Clown has this interesting bit:
the equation of "Bozo" and "dunce" may be credited to Anselm of
Canterbury, who laid out many of his treatises in the familiar form of
a dialogue, between A, who was Anselm, and B, who was Boso, who never
got it right.
In Chicago, WGN's TV program with Harmon was so popular for so long,
it was said that the first thing one had to do when a baby was born
was to request a ticket to the show -- then, just maybe, the ticket
would get the child admitted before he or she became a teenager.
