They pay Sara pennies now to induce her to pay with plastic instead of
cash; the fees to the merchant on this more than make up for whatever
they give her. There's no interest being *charged* here unless Sara
overdraws her account.

A different bank (presumably) here has a patent on the idea[1] of
rounding up debit transactions to the nearest dollar, and transferring
the difference to a paired savings account.

[1] Unfortunately, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is no longer
capable of distinguishing "patentable subject matter", so many patents
these days are granted on ideas.
