Which is one of the things that interests me about spam. Unlike the
spotty nuisance posters, these people want to ingratiate themselves with
us so we'll give them our money; but the constant "nym-shifting" clearly
shows they know people hate them and take steps to avoid seeing their
messages. Is this evidence of some subtle difference between the western
and Chinese mindsets? I've always wanted to meet a selection of spammers
to see what they're like.
As far as Usenet spam is concerned, I've always assumed that their
email addresses are quickly blocked by the service provider (e.g.
Google if they're posting through Google Groups), so they have no
choice but to change frequently.

Google won't even block messages which are pointed out to them by
individuals as illegal, and, as I've suggested, they don't seem to
mind commercial spam. Either because any increase in traffic is grist
to their mill, or because they want Usenet to become unusable so that
Web conversation has eventually to go through Google Groups.

Not Usenet messages, no, but most ISPs will quickly close down the email and web-hosting accounts of spammers.
