I'm sure others have realized that this discussion is about US practice. I used to enjoy surprising my kids' friends by telling them that I did not have a high school diploma.
I was educated in Scotland and if I do have the various certificates listing my passes in the national exams and a Junior Secondary Certificate issued by the County, which is rather like a high school diploma if awarded at the age of 14 or so.
