After almost 30 years of going to the same guy, I changed dentists because
every time I went in there the turkey tried to sell me something (I think he
must have attended a seminar on revenue enhancement). Like a gizmo that I
was supposed to put in my mouth every night to prevent my supposed grinding
of my teeth and cost "only $400", accompanied with a patronizing smile when I
denied grinding my teeth (the new dentist detects no tooth grinding, but he
did detect an abscess that the first one missed).

I told mine that I grind my teeth during the day too, so what was the point?...r

As a person who suffered - greatly - from TMJ disorder for many years,
I do see a point there. Bruxism, the grinding of teeth and clenching
of jaws, is one of the major causes of TMJ episodes. I was a
clencher, not a grinder, but I was clenching on unevenly aligned
teeth. After many years of being seen by otologists who didn't
understand the problem, I finally found a dentist who did. After
having my teeth ground down on one side, the problem diminished a
great deal.

John's dentist could have been right. Most tooth grinders do so in
their sleep and don't know that they grind. That "gizmo" (I wore one
for a while) can help with the grinding but not with the clenching.
