But I will always be pleased that my German teacher said my 'r's made
me sound French, in German. I think to have a different foreign
accent in each of one's foreign languages is a worthy goal once you're
past the stage where you have any hope of approaching sounding like a
native speaker. At least it's interesting and occasionally confuses
the listener.

I was told (in Argentina) that I have an Argentinian accent when I speak Spanish. I don't think that can possibly be true (no one would mistake me for a native speaker), but it probably reflects a tendency to exaggerate certain characteristics that distinguish Chilean Spanish from peninsular Spanish.

When I tried out the few words of German I know, I was answered in Dutch.

What on earth time was it in Newcastle when you wrote this? Do you sit at your computer very late at night, or very early in the morning?
