That would be consistent with the Canadian use of "cultural mosaic"
(as opposed to the US "melting pot"); I could be wrong, but I think
that phrase became common about the same time. (Is "cultural
mosaic" still in use?)
It is still around, I think mostly in academia. I don't think it's
something you'd hear or seen often in the regular media. I think the
concept is still accepted.
