Mrs Allanby and the young man are being compared to St. Patrick and the wurra-wurra in the way it took a long time and much prompting before they finally came to blows. Without more context I can't decide which was which but the last clause suggests it was the young man who needed to face up to Mrs. A. and, having eventually done so, emerged unscathed. But I might be wrong.
What's an "wurra-wurra?":-)GIYF. It is/was an ancient idol worshipped by the Celts - hence St.
Patrick, the Welshman who took Christianity to Ireland.
I Googled, of course, and I found the references to St. Patrick. But I
can't make a sense of it in this context.
Thanks.
