Indeed. I have heard the view expressed that Enron and similar
recent scandals happened because the perpetrators learned about
agency theory in their MBA studies and believed that that was the
way the world worked. If all managers are assumed to be motivated
by greed, they may adapt their behaviour to match this assumption.

But my erudite and charming friend Professor Page argues that such
models can still be a helpful way of understanding the world.
... Indeed this is so. I think it is likely that the models of human
behaviour offered by religion have caused many times more misery and
devastation than the dull scribblings of economists. Economists,
after all, acknowledge that their assumptions are untrue.

Earlier this evening I was watching a TV documentary on Mormonism.
Apparently many Mormons now accept that the revelations of Smith are
implausible. They keep their religion anyway, for reasons that haven't
yet been explained. If there's no explanation in Part 2, I might ask an
economist.

Mormon theology is no more implausible than the Christian
theology. Nor is Scientology, for that matter.
