Is it true that the farmers of east Tennessee measure the
yields from their corn fields in gallons per acre? An
east-Tennessee farmer once told me that.
He may have been (probably was) pulling your leg. Unless he
was using the crop just for "moonshine" (which he would
hardly publicize), corn crops were/are measured in bushels.
It was a joke, and in repeating it here I thought readers
would take it that way.
Well, I thought it might be a joke. It sure sounded like a joke, but you never know. Joking remarks sometimes don't translate well when they're written: You can't see the speakers facial expressions/body language.
But even though he joked about it, I suspected there was an
undercurrent of truth, that some of the farmers may indeed
have measured their yield in gallons (of corn liquor) per
acre.
Maybe.
