"Bugger", however, shows no signs of taking the same route as "beggar"
and "burglar", maybe because "bug" is already used as a verb, though I
wonder if it was at the time "burgle" entered the language. (I doubt
whether the fact that it ends in -er rather than -ar has anything to do
with it, as these changes are surely based on sound rather than
spelling.)
