IMO, the audience was helping him out. They united with him in his efforts in what looked very much like a "we're with you" moment.
Note: Apparently, the young man was disabled in some way. Also, I couldn't tell if he was laughing or crying. Anyway, and as Joey would say, "props" to the fans. (Did I use "props" correctly? And is "props" now passe?)
