You are assuming that a trope being used for political purposes has to
make sense. The right wing has recently been delighted to discover
that the United States is rapidly becoming an adjunct of Mexico. This
is absurd, but that is beside the point. The point of the "second
largest Spanish-speaking city" is to emphasize that we are being
invaded, and it is vitally important to Do Something. Of course this
doesn't actually make sense, and of course the current crop of
nativists are saying the same things their predecessors did about
earlier waves of immigration. But fact and logic are not the point:
rather, it is fearmongering.

Saying that the Mexicans invaded Los Angeles is certainly
reversing history.
