The run on, and the rescue of, Northern Rock, is covered by MSM
outside the US only, as far as I can tell, so for USers -- definitely
OT -- I'm excerpting a bit here OT:

THE JERUSALEM POST Sep. 20, 2007

...a run on an existing bank, of flesh-and-blood people queuing in the
street outside bank branches, determined to get their money out, has
been virtually unknown in the developed world since the Second World
War.

It was, however, a notably British queue of people. People quietly
waited their turn and came back tomorrow if they didn't get to the
front before the branch closed; the staff kept the branches open as
long as possible into the evening; everybody grumbled that the
Government should "do something about it" and rang up Radio 4 to
complain that the web site was a bit busy.

Some chap tried to withdraw a million from our local branch and was a
bit peeved when they didn't have it to hand.
