I believe that you are correct. I know of no word for "the vile stuff
that passes for food in France" in the US, although there are
certainly a lot of jokes about it.

One of the differences I've noticed between the US and Europe is that
many of us are somewhat embarassed by our countrymen's inability to
apppreciate the cuisines of other countries and feel that it reflects
poorly on Americans. Europeans, on the other hand appear to feel that
an inability to appreciate American food reflects poorly on ...
