It's frustrating in doing a crossword puzzle to have a
section in which everything fits except one string that
seems to be impossible to be a valid word. This morning it
was "MRPIBB", with the clue "Coca-Cola product".

In a *proper* crossword, that clue would have been something like:

"Roger Vadim holds constant for a drink".

"Crossword" can refer to two quite different sorts of
puzzles, one commonly found in the US and another in the UK
and Canada. My remarks had to do with an American
crossword. I suppose that in using the word "proper", you
were thinking of a UK crossword.

My impression is that UK crosswords have riddles for clues.
A good American crossword will have clues that are often
cleverly ambiguous but not so obscure as to be called
riddles.
