For states there's also Hawai'i. Except the apostrophe isn't
actually punctuation, it's a phonetic.
Evan Kirshenbaum writes:
And it's not an apostrophe. It's an `okina, which points the other
way[1]: Hawai`i.
[1] 6, not 9.
And it's not there in English, unless you're using the Hawaiian name
of the place in English. In English usage. :-)
Curiously, the first page I looked at on the state government web site
(http://www.ehawaii.gov/dakine/index.htm) has it both ways.
It's the official state name, so we have to have it that way.
I took a look at that web page, and it does have it both ways.
The official change in name wasn't all that long ago and I'm
guessing some web pages have escaped proper updating.
It does say "Connecting you to Hawaii state government". That's
the new portal.
The old portal, http://pahoehoe.ehawaii.gov/portal/ , says
"Connecting you to Hawai'i state government."
They really should make up their minds. I've been trying, without
much luck, to search for whatever enabled the use of the name
"Hawai`i". I can't find it in the state constitution, which
systematically uses "Hawaii" but that's a pretty big document;
maybe some amendment did it.
