Are you too young to remember WWII?

The French army was rather decisively defeated. That's not quite the
same as surrendering after the first shot is fired.

Perception at the time was that Hitler
had built an invincible war machine,
and that he could blitzkrieg anyone into submission.

Many Americans were 'surrender monkeys' at the time.
They felt that there was no point in supporting Britain,
since Britain would soon go the way of France.
Better be friends with Mr Hitler right away,
instead of antagonising him by supporting the losers first.
(And he did know how to deal with those commies)

Churchill, recognizing the mood,
had a Messerschmit 109 that was captured almost intact
sent to New York for a propaganda exhibition,
to show those American defaitists
that Britain was still fighting
and that the Germans could be defeated too.

Finally America was forced to become 'good',
not of it's own accord,
but only because Hitler was fool enough
to declare war on them,
(after Pearl Harbor)
