Are you too young to remember WWII?

The French army was rather decisively defeated. That's not quite the
same as surrendering after the first shot is fired. Besides, large
numbers of the French people refused to surrender, continuing the fight
either as part of the Resistance or by joining the government in exile.

I've never understood the term "surrender monkeys" in the context of the
Iraq war. Refusing to support the aggressor has nothing to do with
surrender. If anything, it illustrates determination to stick to one's
principles rather than being browbeaten into cooperation.
