Only a feeble-minded person could believe that Iraq will at that time
be what the Bush administration professed to believe. There is little
or nothing in the history of the Middle East to lend any support to
such a notion. The US has simply stirred up an ants' nest and cannot
expect that it will magically quiet whether the metaphoric stick is
present or not. All indications are that the situation in Iraq has
only provided a focus for increased hostility.

The ten US soldiers killed this Monday were followed by nine on
Friday, and so we're supposed to believe that "the surge" should be
given a chance. Bushies have postponed the start date for measuring
surge effects several times, trying to optimize, and now it doesn't
start until May -- but if May surpasses April's 100+ soldier deaths,
we can be sure there'll be another postponement. The increase in
hostilities toward our troops in the last six months is documented
several ways -- the highest number of fatalities in any six months of
"the war;" the king of Saudi Arabia condemning our "illegal invasion
and occupation" of Iraq; Mutaq al-Sadr calling on his vast Shia
militia to oust the US by attacking us everywhere in Iraq; Sunni
leaders calling on the US to get out and leading the insurgents in
roadside bomb plantings and, lately and more audaciously, daylight
attacks on US check points and patrol bases. Staying the course will,
as stated, be hideously expensive in troop losses, lifetime
maintenance for the injured, and other costs (recruitment for
replenishment will get much more expensive). Eight of the first nine
major reconstruction facilities inspected this week, which were
previously called "successes," were found to be "crumbling" and
nonfunctional. When is enough "enough?"
