Clearasmud.
It is actually much clearer than that.
If you take the word of your science teacher that all objects fall to
the Earth at the same rate, you are accepting a truth as a belief,
But it's not truth. Leaves do not fall as quickly to earth as
cannon balls do. Helium baloons even less so.
but if you test it, which Aristotle apparently did not when he
surmised that heavier objects fell to Earth faster than lighter
objects did, you will learn that it is true. Unless you test it, as
Galileo did, you will only "believe" what your science teacher has
told you; after you've tested it, you will no longer "believe" it to
be true but will know that it is "True".
Not a trivial example.
No more trivial than any other example that contains a falsity.
In the quotation above, the merchants who buy gold and jewels know
that what they buy is the real thing; they take no one's word, not
even their friends'. They test the items to verify their
authenticity. Belief gives way to knowledge.
So they believe their tests work, and that they can interpret the
test results correctly then?
Here's a small flat cylinder of stamped metal. Test its dimensions,
weight, resistivity and inductivity. Is it a silver dollar if it
shares those 4 properties?
