Tony Cooper (or somebody else of the same name) wrote thusly in message
<mi0i13d45ega2v97mik65vekvaktu03std@xxxxxxx>:
Noted in another newsgroup:
"Around mid February, we understand his computers, records and safe
deposit boxes were all seized and ranshackled by the Feds."
I thought that "ranshackled" was a complete error, but it turns out
that it's just a spelling error. "Ramshackled" is defined as
Out of repair. A ramshackled house; perhaps a corruption of RANSACKED,
i.e. plundered. - The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, Francis
Grose. The Urban Dictionary says it has current use as "a vicious
attack" and "bad, or poorly planned".
I'm familiar with "ramshackle" in the out-of-repair sense, but not as
"ramshackled". I would say "a ramshackle house".
It's more likely that these Feds (whoever/whatever they are, we don't have
them over here) *ransacked* said computers, records and safe deposit boxes.
This doesn't sound like somebody selecting the wrong worm from a spill-
chucker, rather whoever wrote this was unsure of the correct spelling of
"ransacked" and his ramshackle memory got things muxed ip with a totally
different word.
