Something that I found extremely disturbing in English was "telling
time", not the hour, but the time: "What _time_ is it?" The only
correct answer seemed "It's present time", or, "time to make the
coffee", like in that familiar commercial.

It's Miller time!

Yeah, well, you can take your beer and put it back in
the horse from which it came.

"What time is it?"

* glances at her watchless wrist *

The time is half a hair past a freckle.

At some point you really should find the Kino DVD of "The Gaucho" starring
Douglas Fairbanks...while the main feature is an entertaining action pic, the
real selling point is the short comedy "The Mystery of the Leaping Fish"...in
it, Doug plays detective "Coke Ennyday", a layabout wearing a bandolier full of
drug-filled syringes, whose office clock has, instead of numbers, the markings
"Eat, Dope, Drinks, Sleep"....

What disturbs me, Arcadian, is this constant use of a passive
severely past tense voice. As you know, I rant about this almost
all the time.

"I was thinking you should shut up."

Fine, what are you thinking now?

You'll *love* polite Japanese...nobody ever makes a bold declaration of
fact...where we would say "I want to eat dinner", a typical Japanese equivalent
would literally translate as "I am thinking that it is the case that I would
like to be eating dinner"....r
