Do have any examples of the inverse case -- i.e. distinctions that we
don't bother to make in English but which speakers of other languages
regard as essential?
Something that I found extremely disturbing in English was "telling
time", not the hour, but the time: "What _time_ is it?" The only
correct answer seemed "It's present time", or, "time to make the
coffee", like in that familiar commercial.
On the same line of thought:
I also found it bizarre when people on the street asked me "do you
have the time?" not the hour, not even "what time is it", but if I
possess the Time.
BTW, the fellow non-native speakers on this forum could greately
enrich this discussion with interesting contributions that could give
us all some different perspective on language and even philosophy of
life.
