Hello and welcome to my quandry: There is a word I'm struggling to
recall that defines the act or sentiment directed toward future
generations. Its like saying we should preserve wilderness land or
conserve energy and other natural resources simply because someone
later on will have a chance to use them. I'm writing an Op-Ed about
global warming and toning it to focus on young people and why they
should step up and do something, call on Congress (in the U.S.) to
act, call on their energy providers, etc... Another application would
be saying we should fix social security or reduce the deficit simply
because its the right thing to do for future generations. This word
may have be an "ism" but I can't recall that for sure either. I'd
appreciate any input because its driving me wacko.

In academic circles 'intergenerational altruism' is often used to mean
the phenomenon of one generation making certain altruistic sacrifices
for the benefit of a different generation -- something like parents
helping their children or children, their parents. That'd be one way
to go.
Altruism it is! Wonderful input everyone!
Jerry: My quandry is larger than this one word search. I have been
asked to write an OpEd about Earth Day and global warming and as
IANACS (I Am Not A Climate Scientist) I'll think of words that
encapsulate arguments because it will keep me from writing a long-
winded piece.
The Thesaurus is a great tool and altruism appears in Roget's II under
'kindness'.
Debate words are fun and I remember them fondly. Inherency was
another word for 'status quo' right? The affirmative may use it to
plead their case on the grounds that homelessness, for example, is
prevalent. Then follow-up by pointing to government or industry
failures to deal with the problem. The negative would use inherency
on, say, deficit spending. They would argue that no big spending has
occurred recently and read something from Business Week more than
likely.
Thanks again!
