I don't know if it's still on, but there was a TV show called "It
Takes a Thief" on the Discovery Channel, I believe, starring two
ex-burglarers who would proposition a likely homeowner that they could
break into their house. The payoff was that afterwards, the show
would install a brand-new security system for the "lucky" folks, and
then try to break in again, to see if they were using it properly.

Anyhow, these guys never had a problem breaking into houses with all
kinds of intimidating-looking dogs; worst-case, they'd grab a bit of
meat from the fridge and throw it in the laundry room and lock the dog
in there. Most of the time these scary dogs, whose owners would swear
up and down would bark like mad if anybody even came to the door,
would just lie there and whine a bit.

Also, one other thing I recall from the show was that the identity
theft market was usually a secondary source of income for the thief,
so they'd do their best to grab anything that looked like financial
papers, passports, checkbooks, etc.; the thief himself wouldn't do
anything with them, but the guy they sold them to would.
