Well, you may be right, but I see nothing in either your original
remark or in your elaboration of it to suggest that I misunderstood
it. Your elaboration only make sense if you know when the Russians
adopted the name "Tichiy" for the Pacific: if it was a long time ago I
see no reason to think they were doing anything other than translating
the perceived meaning. If it was quite recent then I suppose you could
be right. Do you know when the word entered Russian?

Interesting. What makes you believe it could be relevant as to when
the Russians started using the name "Tikhij"?
