I am always puzzled about where the $ sign came from?
The dollar sign has a stick over the letter "S".
What is the relationship between S and the US dollar?
If you superimpose the letter "U" over the letter "S", you get US.
Modify the "U", and you have $. (Handwritten, the $ often is done
with two full verticals. The single abbreviated vertical makes a
cleaner typeface, though.
