Isn't that the definition of "interesting"?....
....... In effect I was wasting my time listening to
opinions that I already had; but that's what made the talk interesting.

It's the same with music..........
For the sake of intellectual growth I should really be listening to
music that I've never heard before.

Or books. About 50% of my reading consists of books I've never read
before, but the other 50% is re-reading the books on my bookshelf. ...

There seems to be 'satisfaction and comfort of the familiar/expected'
that nourishes the emotional health, in balance with 'challenge of the
new/unfamiliar' that nourishes the intellectual health. Music, food
and wine are probably great examples of the former whilst travelling
and the Rubik Cube are examples of the latter. It has always amazed me
thinking about music or food that you expect the next bit and when it
matches...oh....pleasure.

I don't think one should do just one, or more one than the other.
Perhaps the best is to keep a balance -where that balance is changes
with time and circumstances too. Books and friends, and food too, seem
to exhibit the balance. Not necessarily in the one entity; an
'interesting' something including a friend, perhaps especially a
special friend/mate/potential-mate, can be very interesting precisely
because of the combination of the comfort of the familiar and the
refreshing newness of the unfamiliar.

Never know whether I make sense when rambling in long sentences. Can't
help it when my mind thinks in lengthy rambling ways like that....
