On the Hiawatha light-rail line here in Minneapolis, an automated
voice announces when coming to a stop which side to exit. I still
see people get confused because they go to the wrong side, to their
left or right when they had been sitting facing [backwards] while
the announcement always refers to [the train's] left or right ...
This is why the terms "port" and "starboard" are useful: they refer
unambiguously to the *vehicle's* left and right. Not that I'm
suggesting the announcement should use those words...
Unambiguously? Not being a boater, I never knew that. Oh, I know port is
left, etc., but not the rest. (I might've had I ever thought in any
depth about the matter, but there's never been a need.)
I have always thought that it is unambigous but now I'm wondering
about the local ferry, which is a bit like a shoe box. One blunt end
leads as it goes south and the other end leads as it goes north. I'd
say that port & starboard applies in relation to the end (bow is a bit
kind) that is leading the way.
This would probably apply to a subway train as well and, if anything,
be less ambiguous than with the ferry.
