But let's not single out the Catholic Church. The witch-hunt
in protestant Europe left some 40 000 to 60 000 people burnt
or hanged during the same period. There were also other
religious massacres between Christians.

An essential element is missing: the status the Roman Catholic
Church assigned to itself. When a group of people unite in a
community that is alleged to be God's Church on earth with a man
at the helm who is alleged to be the personal representative of
God's Son on earth, then they leave themselves open to unusually
careful scrutiny commensurate with the status they've assumed
for themselves. It wasn't until 16 centuries later, after people
had started emerging from the Middle Ages, that Protestantism
came into being to benefit from the darkness of men's minds and
to promote their superstitions. Protestantism needed time to
catch up.
Which is presumably what Islam is doing 600 years later.
