I don't say Eye-rack and Eye-ran either.

That once would have been considered a purely dialectal
pronunciation in American English, at home in Appalachia and
parts of the South. It's odd that the pronunciation has spread
among American politicians and in US media. Admittedly, Iraq and
Iran don't have a traditional place in the vocabulary of
American dialects, but the pronunciation after their appearance
would certainly have been influenced by another well-known form,
namely " Eye-talians," which has been widely used to refer to
Italian immigrants in areas where the dialects are spoken,
although "high-class" dialect speakers have long looked down on
that particular pronunciation as uncouth.

And those of us who were identifiably Italian assumed it was someone's
lame attempt to take a shot, althout "eye-tie" was a more explicitly
insulting descriptor.
