Is there a difference between the American and the British
pronunciation of words starting "hu-"?
In British English, the /hj/ sound is virtually indistinguishable from
the sound represented by "ch" in German in words like "ich" (/c/ with a
cedilla). Some speakers seem to be going even further down this path
and saying "shuge" for "huge".
It was only recently that I realized this. Before that I was baffled
by instructions on pronouncing German that said the ich-Laut was like
the "h" in "huge".
For this American speaker, "huge" is still /hjudZ/, but that /h/ is well
way to becoming /c/...check back with me in another ten years....
Palatization of /h/ before high front vowels? Happened in Mandarin Chinese
during the Ching Dynasty.
