Note that Missouri's is "Salus populi suprema lex esto". Seeing
this, just about every Missourian would say: Show me a translation.
All over the United States, at various times, there are movements to
make this city, county, or state an official "English only" area.
This is usually the result of some disgruntled people not being able
to understand some Hispanics they've been in contact with. I wonder
if these people that "English only" legislation would require that
their money, city and state seals, and state mottos be changed.
Most of the state mottoes are either Latin or English...running down
the list, the only exceptions I see are California (Greek), Hawaii
(Hawaiian), Minnesota (French), Montana (Spanish) and Washington
(Chinook)....r
I noticed that Kansas state motto is "Ad astra per aspera." I have always known (since early childhood in Latvia) the expression to be "Per aspera ad astra." Google shows a ratio of approximately 2.5 to 1 for my version. What gives?
