Not taboo, but certainly rare. Likewise '***' when referring to a
rooster. You will hear it among poultry growers/breeders/fanciers, but
seldom in normal conversation outside those groups.
I would add farmers to your list -- ones with small farms where chickens and pigs were raised for food while the crops were for sale or trade (and a small garden provided veggies for the family). Such things were very common at one time. (I was born on such a farm, but didn't live there for very long.)
