Seriously, though,
there are occasions when you need a mono-spaced typeface, and there
aren't many commonly available ones to choose from. Monaco (available
on Macintoshes -- I don't know what the Windows equivalent would be)
looks good on the screen, but weird when printed. If you visit the sort
of news group frequented by Linux enthusiasts you'll see lots of
signatures that look very odd (nothing lines up the way it's intended
to) because they were designed by people who assume that everyone does
everything in Courier.
Courier does work as a fixed-width font. But except for the odd table why do we need a fixed-width font?
Usenet is that way for historic reasons; there is actually no reason why we couldn't post here in html. The only advantage is a kind of level playing field where everyone looks the same, and I guess we can thank God we're not plagued with amateurs mixing fonts and colours.
