Now, it seems, the whole sodding world has filled up with twerplets who
think that Times-Roman is cool.

At the Government office where I work, MS Office rules the world. We
are standardized on some ancient version of Outlook (which is probably
better than the current one, things being as they are these days), and
everyone is free to set his or her own font, color, text size, etc.
Many's the time I've opened an e-mail and seen blue text in 10-point
Times New Roman. It's literally illegible to these old eyes.

Fortunately, Outlook lets me edit incoming e-mails, so the first thing
I do is change the size to 14-point and the color to black. That's
enough of a fix that I don't bother to change the font. My own
outgoing messages use 12-point Lucida Sans Unicode. I find it very
easy to read, and no one's ever complained to me about it. (But then,
I don't bother bitching to the people who send me 10-point blue TNR,
so silence ain't necessarily agreement.)

The obvious solution would seem to be to just send e-mail in plain
text format, so that every writer/reader could choose the font that
appeals most to him/her. This would also please any correspondents
who still think that HTML may be fine for the Web but has no place
in e-mail, or any who use mail-reading programs that don't deal well
with HTML-ized messages. Too simple? Luddite-ish? "Just saying",
maybe.

Yeah, what he said.

I'm surprised to learn that Bob goes in for this HTML e-mail business.
Bob, doesn't your antique version of Outlook allow you to display the
plain text version of incoming mail, in your (once-and-for-all) choice
of font? Doesn't it allow you to send plain text e-mails?
