I did say "apparently", although my bemused tone of voice may not have
made it through the ether. My own understanding of the word was that
it had always primarily meant "Mexican" (but look what I thought about
"dago"), and might have a connection with an obsolete or dialect word
for grease; but I can't remember where I came across that notion, many
years ago.

Incidentally, when I was growing up in Brooklyn (FLCIA) "spic" essentially
referred to Puerto Ricans.
