(old/new model). There's no messing with proprietary PC software -
it just looks like a drive to the computer. You can set bookmarks
for later restarting, it remembers where you were when you switched
it off, the fast-forward can go through a 2-hour programme in a few
seconds. It does only work with MP3 and WMA, but I can live with
that. And you can put your photos on it if you want.

How does it compare to an IPOD?

I don't have iPODs in the house as I eschew the trendy on principle,
so I've never held one, but I would say it's a great improvement.
Firstly, there's no requirement for any special software on the PC.
The device is recognised as an external hard disk and you can copy
files onto it by any means you wish. This means that you don't need
to install iTunes or whatever - I just use a simple synchronisation
programs to synch My Music to the GMini. Of course, you can back up
any type of files from your PC if you want - it just won't play them.
And Mac, I presume. It can also play videos - you can convert an
entire movie and watch it on the little screen, although I've not
tried this.

It also sucks the photos off my camera's CF card which means that I
can make a backup in the field without a PC.

I love it. I use it in the car via an illegal FM transmitter (these
are legal in the US, I think) and I play it through the bedside
stereo at night. I didn't try the bundled earphones as I already had
a superior in-ear bud type pair from Sony which are the only ones
I've ever found to stay in my ears without falling out.
