I deliver pizzas for Domino's and my frustration with people has really
started to build up over the past few weeks. I want to know why SO many
people around here don't tip their delivery person or tip very, very
poorly?
Around here?
Usenet is an international forum, so your (presumably) American perspective
on this issue is rather misplaced. Indeed, it is a matter of some chagrin to
many of us non-Americans that the concept of giving gratuities to some
workers (but not others) has been exported to our shores and is becoming
some sort of expectation or obligation.
In most countries, the presumption is that someone who is working for an
employer is being paid to do so. We do not tip doctors, dentists,
architects, hairdressers or bank tellers. We have no opportunity to tip the
people who make our shirts and motor vehicles or process our parking fines.
Why should waiters or pizza delivery drivers be any different?
To give these people charity because they are underpaid in the first place
is to give their employers an excuse to continue underpaying them.
If you want more money, demand it from the person who is paying your wages.
If that means raising prices, then let it happen. If it means that pizza
delivery becomes uneconomic, then the pizza eaters will have to go out to
get their food, or agree to pay a higher price.
But please don't assume that the consumer is responsible for your
remuneration, beyond paying the agreed price for the service.
Yes, I know that this will be seen as provocative in regions where tipping
is the norm, and that it will be cold comfort for the exploited, but the
whole concept of tipping is anti-worker and it needs to be challenged until
it goes away.
