Why do so many people fail to tip their delivery person?

I deliver pizzas for Domino's and my frustration with people has really
started to build up over the past few weeks. I want to know why SO many
people around here don't tip their delivery person or tip very, very poorly?
I know people who deliver for Papa John's, LovShack, Pizza Express, and
Jimmy John's who all wonder the same thing. I'm not trying to offend anyone
by this post, but what's the deal? Does it really pain people to have to
give up an extra buck or two for the convenience of having food brought to
you? Too many people around here seem to take that for granted.
Maybe they don't realize that before tips, Domino's drivers are making below
minimum wage. New drivers are hired at $4.25. The more experienced drivers
are only making $4.75 per hour. We're reimbursed 60 cents for gas money for
campus orders. That's it. So, yeah, we work for tips. Not only do we have to
cover fuel expenses, but also wear and tear on our vehicles. A driver that
works many hours will probably need an oil change once a month.
I'm just so tired of showing up to someones' dorm, apt, house, whatever and
watching them sign a credit slip and hand it back to me with nothing.. or
pay me exact change down to the last penny or give me $20 worth of misc
coins. If you have to dig under your couch to pay for your food, you
probably shouldn't be ordering delivery in the first place! Order carryout
and get off your lazy bum.
The bottom line is people really should appreciate their delivery people. We
bust our asses in rain, snow, or shine to deliver your food as quickly as
possible.. we deal with your dog attacking us, drunk ass customers giving us
***.. we climb to the 5th muthafucking floor or your apt building even when
your elevator is broken.. hell, we bring you food at 3 or 4 am when nowhere
else is open!!! so show a little bit more appreciation! Even if you truly
can't afford to give more than $1, it's better than stiffing us. I think
everyone here knows what it feels like to be a student without much money,
but it feels good to feel appreciated and I think we all can agree with
that.
Edit: THANK YOU to all the people out there who regularly tip!! We really do
remember who you are and try to make sure that you get the best service.
