I am lucky in that my name, Robert, is accepted as name in most
countries I have visited, although its pronunciation varies
drastically. (One exception was Macedonia, where it was heard as
"robot" (slave)).
However, if your name is John or Henry, you are very likely to be
called Jean/Johann/Jovan or Henri/Heinrich. Stephen becomes Stefan
or Stepan, though it is rarely translated to Etienne. Much the same
with other names that are associated with the Christian and, to a
lesser extent, Jewish tradition. True, there aren't a lot of them,
but they tend to be fairly common names.
Here in the US, the reverse is rare, unless the one so named
Anglicizes the name themself. I work with people in France named
"Stephane" and "Philippe", and it wouldn't occur to anybody to call
them "Stephen" or "Philip".
Possible exceptions might be when the given name is deemed
unpronounceable. I know that here in Australia people with such names
are quickly dubbed something else if they don't come up with something
themselves. I do find it odd that quite a lot of the people I know,
whose name is Vasil or Vasilij, have adopted Vic rather than the
obvious cognate Basil.
Fawlty logic, you think?
