Hello,
I wonder how native speakers accept the usage of "dramatically" in
sentences like "the mountain rises dramatically 1500 feet above the
surrounding terrain".
Does it feel like a cliche? Does it convey any real meaning? Can there
be a "drama" of a mountain simply standing? Is it simply a stronger
synonym for "impressively"?
It definately is a cliché, but writers have tried to descibe this
landscape feature for so long that any expression may be a cliché.
You might try another cliché, 'precipitously', or perhaps try a verb
like "juts" which might remove the need for the adjective?
