Acronyms and The Definite Article

In writing a paper, I coined, in the interest of brevity,
the acronym PED for something I call The Principle of Equitable
Distribution.

My question is: when I refer to PED should I write the PED or
just PED, for instance in the following hypothetical sentence:

"According to [the] PED, the inheritance should be divided equally
between the heirs."

On the one hand, "the" seems necessary because "Principle of Equitable
Distribution" is a noun, but, otoh, the PED doesn't look quite right.

I suppose I could use the acronym TPED instead, but that doesn't look
quite right, either.

Your informed advice would therfore be appreciated.
